Luxeon 'DoubleStar'

Bike Light

Here is a bike light that I've been thinking about making for a while. It uses two Luxeon Star LED's, capable of producing a whopping 36 to 40 lumens of light. Very adequate for many bike riding applications. I am running 3 AA batteries at 4.5 volts. I would expect at least 2 hours of full brightness, and then many more hours of gradually diminishing light. It is quite possible to use another battery pack, using 3 'C' batteries or 3 'D' cell batteries, for extremely long battery life. I would expect three 'D' cells to last for at least 18-20 hours at full brightness, and possibly days of gradually diminishing light, excellent for all night rides. It all depends on how much weight you would choose to carry, and how long you need the batteries to last.

I am using 1/4" think aluminum plates, three of them, with copper plates in between. What an awesome heat sink, and it is needed, as the Luxeon Star LED are being overdriven, and produce a lot of heat. However, the heat is quite well disipated, providing adequate protection for the Luxeon Stars.

Very simple. Very dependable.
