A Garrity Flashlight, Modified To Use The 5 Watt Luxeon Star
This is a Garrity Ozark Trail flashlight, which I modified to use a Lumileds cyan 5 watt Luxeon Star, which emits 120 lumens of extremely intense greenish blue light! I modifed the flashlight, to use a 6AA battery holder, which slides into the battery compartment. It is adjustable, from wide angle beam to a very narrow beam. I use 5AA batteries, and a dummy AA spacer. With 5 fresh AA alkaline batteries, from 1 meter, using a tightly focused beam, I measure 8,440 lux! This is a very intense and bright beam, which easily lights up objects at 300 feet.
After about 10 minutes of run time, I measure 107F from the closest spot to the junction I can get, so it is not running hot at all, nor is it really being overdriven, as the internal resistance of the 3 AA batteries limit the current to about 700mA.
See the following photographs of this very interesting modified flashlight.
Here is a beam shot in broad daylight, with the flourescent lights on brightly. There is a lot of light coming in from my window. This is an intense beam of light!
